Local musicians Deni and Bill Climpson faced an unusual challenge when downsizing to Lifestyle Geelong – finding new homes for 135 guitars and five drumkits! Performing for many years as the duo Warm Sands, Deni and Bill already feel comfortable at Lifestyle Geelong having performed at many events held at the over 50s community. With Deni’s last remaining drum kit now stored with family, and Bill’s guitar collection down to a manageable forty, the couple feels light, free and ready for their fresh new phase of life.
“We’ve renewed our whole lives, Deni says. “All of a sudden, we’ve got freedom and new options in front of us. The whole team at Lifestyle Geelong made the decision to move easy and friendly, and we can’t fault the people who work here, especially community managers Maxine and Steve Scicluna.”
Both in their 60s, Bill and Deni were clear they wanted to enjoy a relaxed new lifestyle early. “If you leave downsizing too late, you might not have the good health to enjoy the lifestyle benefits,” says Bill. “My mum’s 91-years old and she’s never moved, she’s ‘going down with the house’. But, we didn’t want to be stuck waiting for the next thing to go wrong.”
Having lived for 28 years in a close-knit neighbourhood, Bill and Deni wanted to feel part of a community again. “Most of our neighbours had moved on, and nothing felt the same,” says Bill. “How else do you make new friends in your 60s? Here, we’re surrounded by like-minded people again.”
Downsizing itself has brought some unexpected psychological benefits. “It was almost therapeutic,” says Bill. “We’d finally summoned the energy to let go of a house full of stuff, and it felt great.” Like any parents, they’re also happy knowing their children now have nothing to worry about. “We’re both comfortable that they won’t have to clean-up the house if anything happens to us,” says Bill. “Our kids 100% support the move,” says Deni. “Even though we’re saying goodbye to the house, they’ve both said, ‘You’re doing the right thing.’”
With Lifestyle Geelong’s 5-star resort-style facilities and fully maintained gardens, the couple is looking forward to continued happiness and health for many more years. “The homes and the Clubhouse are bright and airy, plus the gardens are immaculate,” says Bill. “It makes you feel good.” Plus, they’ll both be keeping up their passion for performing live. “We’ve got a gig in the Clubhouse coming up soon!” says Deni. “Everyone is so friendly. The whole community has been so good to us.”
