Benefits of pet ownership for seniors

The bond between humans and animals goes back millennia and initially began as a working relationship but has since developed into something mutually beneficial to both people and animals. The dynamic relationship that is built through the human-animal bond is beneficial to the mental, physical and social health of both people and animals.

The benefits of pet ownership for seniors go beyond just having a companion close by. Aside from the fact that it is always reassuring to have a familiar face around (even if it's a dog or cat), our furry companions also bring joy and happiness to our homes. Retirement can often leave people at a loss as to what to do with themselves, that's why pets for retirees are such a great idea. They can help give a purpose to everyday life and create a structure and daily routine through things like exercise and mealtimes.

Making New Friends

When you watch young children playing, they have very few inhibitions and can talk or play with anyone in the park, but this gets more daunting as you get older. One of the greatest benefits of having a pet, especially one that needs to be exercised, is that it gets you out and about. Pets can provide an icebreaker for forming lasting friendships, and communal walks with other pet owners are a common activity.

Pets are part of the family and pet ownership for seniors is very welcomed at Lifestyle Communities. We have a convenient on-site free dog wash so you can pamper your furry friends and keep them well-groomed and healthy, and all Clubhouses have a doggy-parking section if you need to pop in.

Which pet Is best suited to you?

Choosing the best pet for you will depend on your needs, your health and your lifestyle. You don't want a boisterous puppy that requires a lot of looking after and exercise if you lack the energy to look after such a pup. Cats can also make wonderful companions, especially for people who can't go out on long walks. They are independent and can look after themselves. Short-haired cats are easier to care for because they don't need to be groomed, and don't shed as much hair as long-haired cats.

Dogs make some of the best pets for retirees because they are very loving, faithful and protective of their humans. They come in all shapes and sizes, so you can decide whether a smaller or larger dog would be more suitable for you and your home. Dogs do require more time and effort to look after and will require walking, but this could be just what you need to get you out of the house.

Aside from the obvious benefits of having a pet, pet cuddles can increase a person's "happy hormones", and seniors who own pets experience less stress than those that don't, due to the increase in levels of dopamine and serotonin, which help keep blood pressure down.
